Living Systems
Ongoing computational art practice built around artificial ecologies, local behaviour and collective form.
About

My practice
Simon Harris (b. 1992, York, England) is a computational artist whose work investigates the visual language of living systems. Drawing on backgrounds in biomedical science and software engineering, he builds artificial ecologies in which simple local behaviours develop into complex collective forms.
Harris writes custom software to compose bodies, environments and pressures rather than predetermined images. His works unfold through the accumulated decisions of their inhabitants, making visible how individuals shape—and are shaped by—the worlds around them.
His long-term ambition is to create art systems capable of growth, adaptation and inheritance: works that might remain alive to change beyond their original moment and, eventually, beyond the lifespan of their maker.
Background
Ongoing computational art practice built around artificial ecologies, local behaviour and collective form.
Real-time graphics, data art, generative systems and interactive installation work for cultural and commercial contexts.
A biomedical education that now informs the questions I ask through custom software.
